October 2

For the first time in my life, I am going to have a suit.

Every senior at my school must take either a mentorship or a senior seminar, and my seminar is on public policy. (It's driving my fruity loops, but that's another story.) And now the class is getting into all sorts of political things, like the Youth Policy Forum and Princeton Model Congress, and I need a suit.

My mother bought her only suit in a thrift store twenty-five years ago for six dollars. It's a navy blue polyester one that very obviously dates to the fifties. And I love some parts of it - the flared skirt and the tapered waist on the jacket - but it's hardly something I can wear to political forums. The jacket's missing a button, and the metal zippers on the shirt show if I don't wear it. Yet the suits in stores are so profoundly boxy and boring, so I've ruled them out too.

The answer, then, is the five yards of grey wool in the attic. It's beautiful fabric my mother bought to make herself a suit with when she worked in a quilting shop, but she never did anything with it. So today I went to one of the vintage shops on Cary Street and bought a suit pattern from the seventies. I'm going to sew sewa grey wool suit with a flared skirt and a fitted jacket, and it's going to be beautiful. I'll be able to wear the skirt with a dress shirt, or the jacket with the skirt from my mom's suit, so I'll have something to wear every day of the flipping Model Congress. I love it. I may hate having to play senator, but at least I can look like myself.

At the Moment...

Feeling: better for having had an email from Mark
Song in my head: “Tax Man" by the Beatles
Word for today: obyasnyat. It's a Russian verb, but I can't remember for the life of me what it means.
Dreamed: that I was looking for a silver candelabra in an antiques store
Reading: The System for Public Policy, which is eating my life. I actually like the book, though. It's about how Clinton's big health care plan crashed.
Link for today: the website I did for my (guess what?) Public Policy class. I'm the only one in the class who knew webbuilding. I'm also the only girl, so I'm rather proud of that.
