The Rennaisance Faire has been resurrected! I couldn't be happier. Not as far as Ren Faire is concerned, anyway. I got a brochure saying it would be touring the state this spring and autumn at a Celtic festival last week. They certainly aren't doing a good job of advertising it, though - no one at school had heard about it, which was odd, since I know of several people who are dying to go. The only reference I can find to it is on the Wenches' Guild site, which I find hilarious. There is actually a guild for wenches. They get really organized about it, too - there's a complex hierarchy and and motivational articles and everything. More power to 'em. Speaking of which, we put on the Elizabethan Rout last Thursday and Friday. It's a five-course dinner with dancing, skits, and all the servers dressed in Rennaisance clothing. We spent a lunch period every week learning to speak the right dialect, who to bow to and when, who to address as what, etc. An alumna came back and portrayed Elizabeth I for us, which was great fun. She really gets into the role, which is good because the queen was quite a character. And I was once again in charge of costumes. It's a lot of work - especially since actors have a unique ability to spill Pepsi on every costume they have - but I like the job. People are rather in awe of anyone who can work a sewing machine, I think, especially when she's behind it 24/7. I've never really had a niche in the school so much as behind that machine in the drama room, and it's a nice feeling. I'm the one they come to when they've busted their buttons or lost a shoe or smudged greasepaint all over themselves. And, a lot of times, I'm the only one who can fix things. It's nice to take an actor desperate because it's opening night and she has no costume and sew her one within the hour. It's nice to launder a stain from a borrowed shirt using the water fountain, hand soap, and the hand dryer in the bathroom. It's nice to be able to help them like that, and it's nice to be needed. I finally realized that the school has a scanner, so I've scanned some of my sketches. They look sillier and sillier the more I look at them, but that's life. They may take a while to load, but here are three.
Song in my head: "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker". The words are sort of sweet, but I don't like the woman who sings it on the recording I have of it. Word for today: expeditious Reading: just finished The Universe Against Her, a little sci-fi Ellen gave me. Link for today: A really wonderful (and relevant) essay by one of the Wenches on being addicted to Creative Men. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read it, so I laughed. Highlight of my day: lying on the grass at Godwin between bus rides with my shoes off and my hair down, reading my novel. May 12
