December 19

How lovely! It's a Wednesday and I don't have to go anywhere. I like school, but this year has been a lot tougher than the last two and I'm very glad for the break. I woke up this morning with a ballad in my head (which I think had been part of my dream) and the sun shining through the window beside me. I don't like to sleep in too late, but eight o' clock is just about perfect.

I started off the day by making a list of things that made me happy. It was something of a pointless exercise, but it made me happy and was thus useful. Anyway, I love making lists.

Things that make me happy:
windows, hardwood floors, the winter solstice, Christmas trees, gingerbread, Custer LaRue, giving people presents they don't expect, good dialogue, Christine's stories, getting enough sleep, eating lunch with people at school, tenors, roses, lavendar, my French teacher, tarot cards, my cat, flannel sheets, having long hair, polkas, snow, candles, getting mail, sending mail, quilts, singing harmony, Valentine's day, Father Fox's Penny Rhymes, cherries, cherry trees, drawing well, Russian, hair ribbons, Harry Potter, writing good poetry, wonderful socks, curtains, apple cider with orange juice and cinnamon, the Easter parade, birch trees, maple trees, Tolstoy, marbles, hummus, being with Christine, making plans, feather quilts, beautiful picture books, Russian again, wearing my hair in two braids instead of one, sunny mornings, china (specifically teacups), being in the woods.

At the Moment...
Weather: sunny and cold. There hasn't been any hope of snow yet because it rarely gets below freezing, but hopefully we'll get some when we're in Berea. It usually snows the week that we're there. Last year it dusted a little bit every day for about five days, which was amazing. I went out in the snow one night wearing hiking socks, which was the most lovely thing in the world. Because you're only wearing socks you can feel the texture of the snow crunching under your feet, but the socks are thick enough that your body heat doesn't melt the snow and your feet stay warm. It's like walking on clouds.
Feeling: cozy
Eating: haven't had breakfast yet
Wearing: a nightgown and my bathrobe
Song in my head: "The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird"
Word for today: icy
Dreamed: that my French teacher came to dinner and wanted to know why I wore so much blue and white.
Reading: Still Hero with a Thousand Faces. I will finish it eventually.
Goal: to make a lot of progress on the Ellara site and to rent one of many Soviet movies my Russian teacher keeps telling us to see.
Link for today: Waiting for Twilight, a really splendid story by Christine
Highlight of my day: waking up
