ANGEL wakes to the sound of a screw-gun. He is lying on his back inside a metal casket. CONNOR is tightening the screws on it. Thick steel cables are wrapped over ANGEL’S ankles, thighs, abdomen and chest, confining his arms at his sides and holding him motionless.

FRED
(voice-over)

CONNOR
(voice-over)

ANGEL
(voice-over)

The casket is dropped into the ocean.

CORDELIA floating about 3 feet above the air - her skin is still gold and blue and she is still wearing oracle robes. She slowly lands on the ground. Her clothes change back into the ones she was wearing in TOMORROW

FRED sees the Wolfram and Hart logo on WESLEY'S computer. She shouts at him.

times over the last five months that if
we went to Wesley he would sort this
mess out. Now I realise you were to busy
being evil to fight evil…

LILAH introduces WESLEY to CONSTANTINE.

LILAH

ten most lucrative software enterprises
in the country.

WESLEY
I believe I’ve read a profile on you
somewhere, Mr. Constantine.

Season IV, Episode IV: Where You Belong
CONSTANTINE puts a book down on a table. The dialogue is from later in the episode.

CONSTANTINE
The subject matter has already been verified.
It concerns certain Celtic spirits.

LILAH confront WESLEY

LILAH
You don’t care what consequences may come from
your works. You’re willing to push morality to one side
for a pay-cheque… At least now you know... Where

ANGEL and CONNOR fight a large demon. They seem to be bickering. We don't hear what they say, only the voice over from later in the episode.

CORDELIA
(voice-over)
We don’t even know he’s sorry.

ANGEL

CONNOR confronts ANGEL.

TEASER

Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Connor's Room [Int.], Evening
The room is a mess. The bed is unmade, clothes are thrown all over the floor and several pizza boxes are left open. Some have been finished while one or two have a few slices left.

CORDELIA is trying to clean up. She's getting nowhere. She reaches for one of the boxes with a yellow rubber glove on her hand.

ANGEL
(off-screen)
It's only pizza.

CORDELIA turns around with a frown on her face. ANGEL stands in the doorway.

CORDELIA
Only pizza?? Sure, to you it's only pizza
but to Connor it's another way of turning
this place into a war zone.

ANGEL
He's just experimenting.

CORDELIA
With pizza?

ANGEL
He's never tried it before.

CORDELIA
So let him try pizza. In the singular. How
many of them did he get through?

ANGEL
Seven I think. I didn't count.

ANGEL smiles weakly. CORDELIA frowns, trying to look as angry as possible but she can't when it comes to ANGEL.

CORDELIA
Seven? He ate seven pizzas?

ANGEL
More or less.

CORDELIA
But seven?!?!

ANGEL
I didn't know what he'd like. As it turns out he's
a "meaty feast" person. Who'd have thought.

CORDELIA
Wonderful! Couldn't you just teach him
to cook? It's a great way to bond. Junk
food is just...

ANGEL
...Lazy? Antisocial?

CORDELIA
Well, yeah. But I was thinking more about
this.

CORDELIA waves her hand over the mess the room is in. ANGEL moves towards her and gently takes her gesturing hand in his.

ANGEL
I'll talk to him about it.

CORDELIA
You better had or I swear I'll be asking for
a pay rise.

ANGEL
Pay rise?

CORDELIA
Unless you're planning on getting a
full time Connor cleaner. I swear, he
was less messy when he was a baby!

ANGEL moves even closer to CORDELIA.

ANGEL
Pay rise it is.

CORDELIA
Really?

ANGEL
Uh-huh.

He moves in to kiss her. She responds by wrapping her arms around him. CORDELIA pulls back suddenly.

CORDELIA
One hell of a pay rise.

ANGEL
I just hope Gunn isn't expecting one any
time soon.

They kiss again, falling back onto the bed with CORDELIA on top.

ANGEL suddenly moans loudly.

CORDELIA
Men! No control!

ANGEL
Uh...

CORDELIA
I know I'm good but you better not be going
evil on me just because of a kiss.

ANGEL
Uh. No. Pizza.

CORDELIA
You're going evil because of pizza?

ANGEL
Pizza. On my back. Oh God.

ANGEL sits up. CORDELIA looks at the pizza slice attached to the back of his shirt.

CORDELIA
Connor can relax. It's not meaty feast!

ANGEL
(sarcasm)
Oh. Great.

CORDELIA looks at ANGEL. She bursts out laughing. ANGEL joins her.


Scene: Alleyway [Ext.], Evening
A WOMAN runs as fast as she can away from an unseen follower.

WOMAN
Oh God, oh God...

She looks over her shoulder. A CRAZY GUY is in close pursuit, getting closer.

The WOMAN hits a fence that blocks her way. She turns around.

WOMAN
Please. No. I've got money. Just don't.

The CRAZY GUY catches up with her, pushing the whimpering WOMAN against the fence.

CRAZY GUY
Pretty lady. Pretty, pretty lady.

WOMAN
You can have my purse. Take it.

She pushes her purse into his hands. He lets it drop to the floor. CRAZY GUY strokes her cheek.

CRAZY GUY
Pretty lady.

He flinches suddenly.

CRAZY GUY
(continued)
Kill pretty lady.

The WOMAN tries to break away. She isn't strong enough. The CRAZY GUY grabs her by the throat. He flinches again.

WOMAN
Please... Don't hurt me...

The CRAZY GUY gives her a sinister smile.

CRAZY GUY
Use pretty lady.

He wraps another hand around her throat as if to strangle her. Her struggling ceases.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Connor's Room [Int.], Evening
CORDELIA is desperately trying to clean the stain from the back of ANGEL'S shirt while ANGEL struts around the room topless in a typical ANGEL panic.

ANGEL
Does pizza stain?

CORDELIA
No.

ANGEL
Thank God.

CORDELIA
Yeah, because this is like the only black
shirt you own.

ANGEL
Well, that's true... uh...

CORDELIA
You know, I have seen you without a shirt before...

ANGEL
Yeah, but not since we...

CORDELIA
Ssshhh...

CORDELIA leans in and kisses him on the cheek. She pulls away and goes back to scrubbing.

She looks up to see ANGEL smiling at her.

CORDELIA'S POV: ANGEL'S face morphs into that of CRAZY GUY then back again.

CORDELIA takes a few shocked steps back. ANGEL runs to her.

ANGEL
What is it?

CORDELIA
Vision.

The door opens. GUNN and FRED walk in hand-in-hand.

GUNN
I swear, I wouldn't be thinking of coming
here this late if you weren't here too.

FRED
Aw, you're so sweet.

GUNN
Well, I try my best. I...

GUNN sees something and becomes a little wary. He disengages from FRED.

FRED
What is it, Charles?
(realising)
Oh.

CONNOR is in the middle of the lobby training. Holding a sword in his hand he goes through a few precise manoeuvres. He looks up suddenly.

FRED
Hey Connor.

CONNOR
(not really bothered)
Hi.

GUNN
You know you could scare clients off
waving a sword around like that.

CONNOR
I'm just training.

GUNN
But waving a sword around tends to
make people... you know... nervous.

CONNOR
I guess.

GUNN
So maybe you should...

Without another word CONNOR stops and nonchalantly twists the sword in his hand before heading over to the weapon's cabinet.

GUNN makes his way towards the office. FRED engages with CONNOR with a bright smile on her face.

FRED
So, how's your day been?

CONNOR
I dunno. Slept most of the day. Worked
out how to use a microwave oven. Dad
showed me.

GUNN
(off-screen)
Less than a month back among the
sane and he's already a normal teenager.
Damn those lively hormones.

FRED smiles. She joins GUNN in the office.

CONNOR opens up the weapons cabinet and puts the sword away.


Scene: Angel's Office, Hyperion Hotel [Int.], Evening
GUNN is watching CONNOR carefully as FRED walks in.

FRED
What is it?

GUNN
You know, as much as I like the kid... and
after all the effort we put into tracking him
down and all... I just think that... I don't
know. It probably sounds real dumb but...

FRED
...Angel's accepting him a little too easily?

GUNN
Got it in one.

FRED moves closer towards GUNN.

FRED
I wouldn't worry. He's a great kid.

GUNN
You think? He sent Angel to the bottom of
the ocean for four months, Connor decides
"oh, by the way I'm sorry for that" and Angel's
acting like nothin' ever happened.

FRED
It'll be okay.

GUNN
You keep saying that.

FRED
Angel's a good father. I know a good father
when I see one and Angel kinda fits the
profile. And if he can't get through to Connor
then no one can.

GUNN
Uh-huh. Way I see it, any day, the kid's
gonna snap. The two are like a clock
ticking down to... hell, if I knew I wouldn't
be so worried. But it's gonna be damn
explosive.

We hear the sound of footsteps outside the office.

ANGEL
(off-screen, excited)
We have a case!


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Evening
FRED and GUNN come out of the office to see CORDELIA and ANGEL come from upstairs. CONNOR is standing against the reception desk.

FRED
Really? Cordy had a vision?

CORDELIA
Uh-huh. Major freaky guy... chasing
some girl down an alleyway.

GUNN
You just gotta keep away from those
dark alleys. It leads to some scary
ass stuff.

CORDELIA
Now there's a phrase that should be
on billboards all around the city.

ANGEL
Best advice ever. Tell them about the
attacker.

CORDELIA
Oh. Right. He was seriously scary. I don't
think he had all of his marbles in his little
sack.

ANGEL
Then I think we better go find him before
he does any more damage. Connor, Gunn...
you're with me.

GUNN and CONNOR glare at each other. They frown.

CONNOR
Sure.

GUNN
You got it, boss man.

ANGEL pulls a piece of paper from his pocket. He looks at CORDELIA.

ANGEL
You're sure this is the place?

CORDELIA
Definitely. I recognised the store on
the other side of the alley.

ANGEL
Excellent. We'll call you with anything
research worthy. C'mon.

He grabs his jacket and goes to the door. There's still a stain on the back of his shirt.

CONNOR
Uh, dad...

ANGEL
Don't ask.

He throws the jacket over his back and they walk out.

CORDELIA and FRED watch them go.

CORDELIA
Not good, huh.

FRED
I know. I think Charles is right

CORDELIA
What? Right about what?

FRED
Angel and Connor.

CORDELIA looks towards the door that they all walked through.

CORDELIA
Oh?

FRED
Charles says he doesn't like how Angel's
just, you know, accepted him after
everything he did. How does one apology
make up for it all?

CORDELIA
(nods)
I get that.


Scene: Alleyway [Int.], Evening
A police cordon has been erected around the crime scene. A variety of cops are hanging around the place. CONNOR and GUNN stand around watching from a distance.

CONNOR
Are you sure he can do this? You know,
convince them to tell him everything.

GUNN
The guy's an expert. At least he's not
going in beating the crap out of them
for information.

CONNOR knows the comment is directed at him. He doesn't rise to the bait.

CONNOR
Couldn't they arrest him?

GUNN
If he's caught tampering with a crime
scene, yeah.

CONNOR
And if he's caught?

GUNN
Your dad knows what he's doing.

CONNOR
I guess... He doesn't come off as the
subtle type.

GUNN
Runs in the family.

ANGLE: ANGEL is hanging around the crime scene. Several COPS are looking over the body. ANGEL glances at the dead young woman. He frowns.

ANGEL
Hey! People! What's up here?

FIRST COP
Who the hell are you?

ANGEL
Someone important. Now what's the
news? Murder? Mugging?

ANGEL pulls out a notepad and begins scribbling things down.

ANGEL
(continued)
Come on. I've got a deadline to meet! The
editor's gonna decapitate me if I don't get
this all down. So what was it?

FIRST COP
Uh, murder... but...

ANGEL walks on. Two PARAMEDICS are hoisting the body away.

ANGEL
You guys are doing a great job! Keep
it up! Don't know where we'd be without
you.

PARAMEDIC
Uh, yeah.

ANGEL
And the victim?

PARAMEDIC
That's confidential.

ANGEL
Oh yeah. Family needs to be told first.
I get that. So any juicy info on who did
this?

PARAMEDIC
You should know I can't say.

ANGEL
Right...

ANGEL puts his hand into his pocket. He pulls out some cash.

PARAMEDIC
Oh. Okay. Well, here's what I know for
sure...

ANGEL
(flashing a grin)
You guys do a great job. Don't ever let
anyone tell you otherwise.

ANGLE: GUNN and CONNOR watch carefully as ANGEL returns from the crime scene.

GUNN
What've you got?

ANGEL
A name. Michelle Chambers.

GUNN
I'll call Fred. Get her to see if she can
get any more on her.

CONNOR
And the attacker? Was it a demon?

ANGEL
Didn't look like it to me. Just some random
assault. No money taken. Apart from the
marks on her neck there's no other signs
on her body that it went beyond that.

GUNN
So some son of a bitch taking his anger
out on her.

ANGEL
Looks like it from here.

GUNN
So why did Cordelia have the vision?

ANGEL looks thoughtful.

ANGEL
That's what I'd like to know.


Scene: Wolfram and Hart, Outside A Meeting Room [Int.]
The door opens and WESLEY walks out decked in a smart suit. He holds the door open as another man, a CLIENT walks through.

WESLEY
Well Mr Masterson, I can assure you that
your associates will not be bothering
you again.

CLIENT
And you're absolutely sure about this?

WESLEY
I have no doubt. He's been dealt with
accordingly.

CLIENT
I don't know how to thank you.

WESLEY
Oh, we're just doing our job. An important
client such as yourself should appreciate
that.

WESLEY looks ahead. Sees someone coming.

WESLEY
(continued)
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some
business to attend to.

CLIENT
Of course. Thank you Mr. Wyndham-Pryce.

The CLIENT walks off. WESLEY moves towards LILAH who is standing against a wall.

LILAH
Not bad.

WESLEY
Only not bad?

LILAH
For someone with no legal training
whatsoever.

WESLEY
(dryly)
I have this strange ability to surprise
people.

LILAH
You do indeed. But I suggest you keep
to your own project for now. People will
start thinking...

WESLEY
Or you're just getting afraid that I'm moving in
on your territory?

LILAH grabs WESLEY and pulls him into an empty adjoining corridor.

LILAH
Your little incident in bringing Angel back
has not gone unnoticed by the Senior
Partners you know.

WESLEY
I'm making a name for myself. Wonderful.

LILAH
As I recall you should be checking on the
retrieval of the scripts… Angel is my territory.

WESLEY
But if I'm the better person for the job...

LILAH
Don't even suggest that. Either you work
with me or stay away from Angel.

WESLEY smiles with mock sincerity.

WESLEY
Well, then we know what my choice is.
I don't work with scum.

LILAH leans in close to WESLEY'S ear almost erotically. She whispers.

LILAH
You seem to forget that you're scum
too, Mr Wyndham-Price.

WESLEY
At least I've got a pretty face to go
with it.

LILAH scowls at him. She begins to walk off.

LILAH
Remember I was the one who got you
where you are now.

WESLEY
Yes. As I recall it involved several crap
shags. Being able to spread your legs
is nothing to be proud of.

LILAH doesn't even turn. She heads off angrily down the corridor.

WESLEY gives a slight smile. He hears someone behind him and turns around. GAVIN PARK is standing there.

WESLEY
Ah, Gavin. It seems I can't avoid irritating
little bastards at all today, can I?

GAVIN
Your astonishing wit won't work on me.

WESLEY
Damn shame. Maybe telling you to get
out of my face will.

GAVIN takes a few cautious steps back.

GAVIN
I'm just here to congratulate you on
handling Lilah back there. She didn't even
think up a comeback. I'm impressed.

WESLEY raises an eyebrow.

GAVIN
(continued)
Of course, if I'd thought sleeping with her
would've been the solution to all of the
problems I had with her I would've done it
a long time ago.

WESLEY
I doubt she'd let you anywhere near her.
She may be a bitch but she has standards.

GAVIN eyes WESLEY up and down.

GAVIN
She's obviously been without it for quite
a while.

WESLEY steps forward and makes GAVIN step back into the wall.

WESLEY
Here's a deal for you. You stay out of my
face and maybe I won't have an excuse
to walk you into the ground first chance
I get. That's how things work around here
isn't it?

GAVIN
Now, Wes. Can I call you Wes?

WESLEY
(coldly)
No.

GAVIN doesn't flinch.

GAVIN
Last time I spoke to you, you were
a little more accommodating. You accepted that
Lilah was in both ours ways. You'll learn that
one of the important things about working at
Wolfram and Hart is that you have to take sides.
These sides tend to be important in deciding
how long you last here. Understand?

WESLEY steps back.

WESLEY
Perfectly.

GAVIN
Of course, if you're planning on stabbing
us all in the back and going to your vampire
friend then maybe you should get out of the
way now. You'd last, oh, an hour or so in
the outside world.

WESLEY
You think I want to return to working for
a man who hates me?

GAVIN
Stranger things have happened. Remember
sides have to be taken. I suggest you
think that over. I'm your best hope of
surviving here.

GAVIN walks off down the corridor as WESLEY watches.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Reception [Int.], Night
FRED is sitting in front of a computer. CORDELIA stands behind her, looking at the screen over her shoulder. ANGEL walks in holding a mug of blood.

ANGEL
Any luck?

FRED
Well, we've got three Michelle Chambers'
on this database.

CORDELIA
And if yours hasn't got a driver's licence
we're screwed 'cause that's all we've got
to go on.

FRED
She's right. This is the only thing we could
find.

ANGEL nods. He takes a sip of blood.

ANGEL
Bring them up.

FRED types a few keys. The pictures of three women appear. One is the victim. ANGEL points to her.

ANGEL
(continued)
That's the one. What've you got on her?

FRED types a little more.

FRED
Oh.

ANGEL
Is that a good "oh"?

FRED
It's just "oh". Nothing special. She's got
two speeding tickets in the last five years...
But I guess you didn't want to know that.
Not exactly important.

CORDELIA
Unless she was viciously strangled to
death by a really pissed off traffic cop...
Which I kinda doubt.

ANGEL leans on the computer table.

ANGEL
Did your vision tell you anything else we
can use? Anything at all?

CORDELIA
I don't know... I felt the girl's fear... And
I saw the murderer's mind.. It was just
confusing.

ANGEL
Confusing? How exactly?

CORDELIA
I... I'm not exactly sure.

CORDELIA twitches suddenly.

CORDELIA
(continued)
Yes you are!

FRED
What?!

CORDELIA
No. I'm really not sure.
(twitches)
Of course you are! You're lying!
(twitches)
I'm not... Really I...

CORDELIA jumps to her feet. She grabs her head. ANGEL goes to her.

ANGEL
Cordelia... Are you?

She pushes him away.

CORDELIA
(to herself)
Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!

ANGEL and FRED look worried.


ACT II

Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Night
CORDELIA is lying on the couch in the middle of the lobby. ANGEL and the others are crowded around her. She is rubbing her head.

CORDELIA
I... I'm not sure... I just... started hearing these
voices in my head...

GUNN
Voices?

CORDELIA
(nods)
They... they just took over then faded away.
It was like they were trying to stop me
talking.

She looks nervously towards ANGEL who has his Thoughtful Face on.

CORDELIA
(continued)
What happened to me?

ANGEL
I'm not sure. Maybe...

CORDELIA
What?!? Don't hold out on me here!

ANGEL
In your vision... you said the attacker didn't
appear to be mentally stable...

CORDELIA
Uh-huh. Real nut job.

ANGEL nods thoughtfully.

ANGEL
Perhaps. If the killer did have some kind
of... I don't know... personality disorder
maybe Cordelia received it... only
temporarily... during her vision.

CORDELIA
Oh, great! I've been infected by a contagious
psycho! It is temporary, right? It won't last?

ANGEL shrugs. CORDELIA glares at him.

CORDELIA
(continued)
Tell me!

ANGEL
I really don't know!

CORDELIA
Well find out damn it! Hearing those voices...
It brought back some kinda unpleasant
memories of getting thousands of visions...

ANGEL
We'll do something. Gunn... Fred?

GUNN and FRED quickly move closer to ANGEL to hear.

ANGEL
Check some news archives... Find out if
anyone's broken out of any mental
hospitals in the past few days.

GUNN
We're on it.

GUNN and FRED walk off into the reception to get at the computer.

CONNOR
What about me?

ANGEL
Go with them. Watch what they do. You'll
need to learn.

CONNOR
Sure. But I get to fight right?

ANGEL
When we find who did this, you get first
punch.

CONNOR
Thanks, dad.

CONNOR leaves ANGEL and CORDELIA alone.

ANGEL kneels down so that he is level with CORDELIA. He takes her hand in his own.

ANGEL
You'll be okay.

CORDELIA
You better be right. I just...

ANGEL
What?

CORDELIA
I don't like the lack of control. It only
lasted a few seconds but it was awful.

ANGEL
Don't worry. We'll work this out.


Scene: Wolfram and Hart, Wesley's Office [Int.], Night
The only lights in the office come from the computer screen. WESLEY looks at the translation from the book on spirits.

He hears the door open but doesn't looks up.

WESLEY
Ah. It's you.

JASON CONSTANTINE walks in. He smiles.

CONSTANTINE
You're working late.

WESLEY
I work here. What's your excuse?

CONSTANTINE smiles. He sits himself on the edge of the desk.

CONSTANTINE
Someone woke up on the wrong side
of the bed this morning.

WESLEY doesn't reply.

CONSTANTINE
(continued)
I wanted to find out the status of my… our
Celtic scrolls.

WESLEY
I've been assured that they're being retrieved as
we speak. Of course, unless I get this book
translated we may never get to use them.

WESLEY gives CONSTANTINE a 'that was a hint to get out of my face' look.

CONSTANTINE looks at his watch.

CONSTANTINE
[continued]
Now if you excuse me, I have a charity dinner
to be at and I haven't found myself a date.
Have to keep up appearances, you know.

CONSTANTINE walks out of the office. WESLEY looks up for the first time.

WESLEY
Yes. We do, don't we.

He gets up to stretch his legs. He walks through the open door into the corridor. CONSTANTINE is talking to LILAH. LILAH glances over to WESLEY and smirks. She places her arm around CONSTANTINE's. WESLEY is left alone.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Reception [Int.], Night
FRED is back on the computer. She blinks several times and rubs her eyes. CONNOR stands looking utterly confused as she works.

FRED
You know, it's really not that complicated.

CONNOR points at the screen.

CONNOR
What's that do?

FRED
That let's me search.

CONNOR
And that?

FRED
That's where I type the words.

FRED
It's not so difficult when you get used to it.
Maybe if we ever have non-case days we
oughta have some study time. It'll be fun.

CONNOR

FRED
Yeah. I remember in Pylea I used to pretend
I had a computer... but it was really a rock and
I'm sure if anyone saw me they would've thought
I was crazy or something but...

CONNOR
I don't think you're crazy. And thanks. Studying...
Not exactly hunting but... yeah... fun.

CONNOR smiles at her. She smiles back.

GUNN walks in and goes straight over to FRED. He glances over at CONNOR who takes a few steps to the side.

GUNN begins to rub FRED'S shoulders. CONNOR watches this carefully.

GUNN
You okay baby?

FRED
Sure. Just looking at a screen all the
time is just... you know. My eyes are
already bad enough.

GUNN
But you look so cute in glasses.

FRED smiles. GUNN begins to massage her temples. FRED closes her eyes.

GUNN

That feel any better?

FRED
Mmmm...

GUNN
I'll take that as a good "mmm".

FRED
I like your hands.

GUNN grins.

FRED opens her eyes. She glances at the screen.

FRED
(continued)
Wait! I think we've got something!

CONNOR moves back to the comuter. ANGEL bursts in having just heard her exclamation.

ANGEL
What is it?

FRED
A man called William Armstrong. It says
he escaped from the Oakville institution
two nights ago.

ANGEL
Oakville?

GUNN
A mental institution. They keep the major
whackos there.

ANGEL
Major whackos? Nice.

GUNN
The most serious cases. The ones they
decided were completely incurable and
haven't got a family to unload them onto.
The things I've heard about that place...
When they get overcrowded they sometimes
open it up, tie the nutcases down and let
a couple of vamps in.

FRED
My God...

GUNN
I heard a helluva lot worse. Scary stuff.
Enough to turn a brother white, you know
what I'm saying?

ANGEL nods. He looks over at the report.

ANGEL
Still, it's strange that this guy's escape hasn't
been made public.

FRED
I guess they just don't want to scare people.
It doesn't say anything here about what he
was suffering from but it must be bad.

ANGEL
Either that or that or they're glad to have a
spare bed.

GUNN
So what's the plan?

ANGEL
We go pay his roomies a visit.

ANGEL heads out. GUNN glances back at FRED then follows him.

FRED
Take care!

CONNOR
Yeah... Good luck.

CONNOR turns to FRED who is back on the computer. He points at something on screen.

CONNOR
(C'tnd)
So what's that do?

FRED smiles at him.


Scene: Mental Hospital, Secure Wing [Int.], Night
It is dark. On around ten beds are several INSANE PEOPLE. They are strapped down and although they are sleeping, they are also mumbling random things that apparently make no sense.

The door to the wing is suddenly forced open. ANGEL and GUNN walk in. GUNN looks back at the broken door.

GUNN
You know, those secure doors ain't exactly
cheap.

ANGEL
Send me a quote and I'll pay it. Hell, they got
a vampire in here without having the doors
unlocked. They should be happy.

GUNN
Except you ain't gonna be doing any
snacking.

ANGEL
What… not even a quick bite?

GUNN looks at the beds. Two of the CRAZIES are now awake.

FIRST CRAZY
Intruder alert! Intruder alert! Enemy on
deck! Intruder alert!

SECOND CRAZY
It's not right. Things don't compute. The
little people are going to be very cross. I
don't like it when they're cross...

GUNN shivers.

GUNN
I hate these places. They freak the hell
out of me. I think it's the smell...

ANGEL
I don't smell anything.

GUNN
You're kidding, right?

ANGEL
Go check out the computer records. See
what you can find on our guy.

GUNN
And you?

ANGEL
I'll see what his little friends know.

GUNN
I really don't think they know who or where
they are... There's no way you're gonna...

ANGEL
You'll be surprised.

GUNN shakes his head and walks out of the ward. ANGEL walks over to one of the patients.

ANGEL
(continued)
Hello.

FIRST CRAZY
Error. Error. Unknown species in close
proximity. Attempting to compute!

ANGEL
I need some help...

FIRST CRAZY
Attempting to compensate for...

ANGEL
Okay. You don't need a straightjacket,
you need a convention.

ANGEL gets up to leave. The FIRST CRAZY begins to rave.

FIRST CRAZY
Please! Shields are down! Deflector grid
malfunctioning... Cannot escape into
hyper-space... God no! Shields are...

The FIRST CRAZY suddenly passes out. ANGEL shakes his head and moves on to the next person.

ANGEL
Hi there.

SECOND CRAZY
Are the little people here? They won't be
very happy if they know I've been talking
to you.

ANGEL
It's okay. I... uh... got permission from them.
They don't mind.

SECOND CRAZY
Are you sure? They only listen to the
garden folk and...

The SECOND CRAZY turns to look at ANGEL. His eyes open wide in awe.

SECOND CRAZY
(continued)
...and angels...

ANGEL
What? What did you say?

SECOND CRAZY
(with a smile)
They let me talk to angels.

ANGEL
(nervously)
Well, that's good. So... uh... did you
know the man who left here a few days
ago?

The SECOND CRAZY glances over to an empty bed. He lowers his voice as if he's discussing some kind of conspiracy.

SECOND CRAZY
He was evil.

ANGEL
Really?

SECOND CRAZY
And... I may be in trouble if I tell you this...

ANGEL
Go ahead. I'm sure you can tell me. If he's
evil I can stop him. That's what I do. I stop
evil people.

SECOND CRAZY
He wasn't human. No one else could see
it but I could.

ANGEL
What... what was he?

SECOND CRAZY
He was many.

ANGEL frowns.

ANGEL
He was what?

SECOND CRAZY
He was many. He was many! He was many!

The CRAZY starts shaking, convulsing and screaming. ANGEL tries to hold him down.

ANGEL
Calm down!

Several other CRAZIES start to wake up and begin to scream and cry.

GUNN runs into the ward.

GUNN
What the hell did you do to him?

ANGEL
I guess... I didn't believe him. He said our
friend wasn't human.

GUNN
Since when was anything we took on
human.

ANGEL
You've got a point. You get everything we
need?

GUNN
I managed to find a few records.

GUNN flashes a few print outs.

ANGEL
Excellent. Now we see if we can help
this guy.

GUNN
Help him? He's killed someone and you're
planning on helping him.

ANGEL
If he was stuck in here he needs help.

ANGEL says nothing more as he walks out.


Scene: Wesley's Apartment [Int.], Night
WESLEY is putting his things away into a file. He opens a drawer to put the file away but there is something there.

Slowly, WESLEY reaches into the drawer.

WESLEY picks up a photograph of ANGEL, CORDELIA and himself. He stares at it fondly for a moment before violently ripping it up. He throws the pieces of photo at the wall and they scatter across the floor.

The door leaving the apartment slams shut as WESLEY leaves.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Reception [Int.], Night
CONNOR sits while FRED keeps working on the computer. CORDELIA is in the background making coffee. She comes in and hands it to FRED and CONNOR.

FRED
Thanks.

CONNOR sniffs the mug.

CORDELIA
Don't tell me you've never had coffee
before.

CONNOR
I have. I take two sugars, not one.

CORDELIA
You can tell that just by smelling it?

CONNOR
Yup.

He hands the mug back to CORDELIA. She walks back to put more sugar in.

CORDELIA
Eugh!

FRED clicks on the mouse.

FRED
No.
(clicks again)
No.

CORDELIA returns, handing the mug to CONNOR then stepping up to the computer.

CORDELIA
Nothing?

FRED
I've checked police databases for sightings
but nothing.

CONNOR
Well, we only have tonight's incident to go with. I
say we just go out and hunt him down.

CORDELIA
Not so fast slayer boy. You may have
all the senses but I think we better wait
until your father gets back.

CONNOR
In which time he could kill again.

CORDELIA
Maybe not. I...

We suddenly flash into CORDELIA'S POV: The surroundings of the office switch to a street. We seem to see an alley and a DRUNK sitting on the ground with a bottle in his hand. Everything morphs back into the hotel again as the vision ends.

FRED
Cordelia? Are you all right?

CORDELIA
I just had a... No! Nothing! I had nothing!
Wait... Maybe I did. Maybe I... No. It
wasn't anything. Don't listen to what... I'm
really sure it works like this because I...
no! Help!

CONNOR
What?!?

CORDELIA jumps up. CONNOR tries to hold her back. She pushes him away violently and makes a run for the door.

FRED gets to her feet.

FRED
Cordy! No!

CORDELIA grabs FRED and pushes her against the wall.

CORDELIA
You don't understand! I didn't mean to do it!
But he did. He doesn't know that I know that
he...

CONNOR
...knows?

CORDELIA
Exactly! And...

CORDELIA loses all of her strength. She falls down. CONNOR and FRED hold her up.

CORDELIA
(continued)
I'm sorry.

FRED
It's okay. What did you see?

CORDELIA
I know where he is.

CONNOR and FRED help her to a seat as she speaks.


ACT III

Scene: Street [Ext.], Night
People watch nervously as CRAZY GUY walks along the street mumbling to himself. He doesn't walk in a straight line but just meanders along the sidewalk.

CRAZY GUY
No, no. It's you who doesn't understand.
I know perfectly well. Of course you don't,
you're fighting to much. Fighting is all I
have. Just give up, it's easier.

Someone knocks into him.

CRAZY GUY
(continued)
Hey! I'm walking here! I don't appreciate
your attitude little man!

WALKING MAN
Freak!

The CRAZY GUY keeps walking, still chatting to himself.

CRAZY GUY
You should behave. You're supposed to try
to fit in. That's what they told you, wasn't
it? I know that but you saw how they looked
at me. No. No more excuses. I...

He looks to his side. The DRUNK from CORDELIA'S vision is sitting in the corner drinking from a bottle in a brown paper bag.

CRAZY GUY
(continued)
Use nobody. Nobody will help get relief.

The CRAZY GUY walks towards the DRUNK.


Scene: Alleyway [Int.], Night
A few minutes later. CRAZY GUY is leading the DRUNK further up the alley.

CRAZY GUY
They tell me to, you see. I don't want to do
it. I just have to.

DRUNK
Sure... You said there was shelter up here?

CRAZY GUY
You have to understand. You're probably a
really great guy... but they don't care about
that. I have to do this...

DRUNK
You okay?

CRAZY GUY
I'm fine.

CRAZY GUY pushes the DRUNK against the wall, wrapping his hands around his throat.

CRAZY GUY
I'll help you when it's done... I promise.

ANGEL
(off-screen)
How about getting away from him instead?

ANGEL and GUNN appear at the end of the alley. The CRAZY GUY turns around quickly.

CRAZY GUY
You don't understand!

ANGEL
I understand perfectly well.

ANGEL runs forward. His fist collides with CRAZY GUY'S jaw. CRAZY GUY falls back several feet before attacking. He hits ANGEL.

GUNN is helping the DRUNK to his feet.

GUNN
C'mon, man. It'll be okay.

DRUNK
Who the hell are you?

GUNN
Someone who helps.

DRUNK
Where am I?

GUNN
Just get outta here! Now!

GUNN points toward the way back onto the street.

GUNN
Go!

CRAZY GUY runs at ANGEL, hitting him in the face over and over.

CRAZY GUY
I have to do this! I need to stop them!

ANGEL grabs CRAZY GUY'S shirt and throws him into a wall. He collides with it and falls to the floor.

ANGEL
And while you keep doing that, I have to
stop you.

ANGEL towers over CRAZY GUY.

ANGEL
(continued)
I can help you. But you have to come with me.

CRAZY GUY
Yes. You can.

CRAZY GUY jumps up and knocks ANGEL down. He grabs ANGEL'S face. Nothing seems to happen.

CRAZY GUY
(continued)
You're not alive...

ANGEL kicks CRAZY GUY off him. He gets to his feet and gets ready to fight.

ANGEL
Whatever it is you do... you can't do it to
me. Now... I'll say this again... calm down
and come with me.

CRAZY GUY
No!

CRAZY GUY turns away and tries to run. ANGEL goes after him. CRAZY GUY spins around and punches ANGEL in the face. His fist impacts loudly. ANGEL staggers away.

ANGEL
So not human...

CRAZY GUY runs. GUNN, who is at the end of the alleyway after helping the DRUNK, gets in his way.

GUNN
I got him!

CRAZY GUY tries to shove GUNN out of the way. GUNN grabs his jacket and uses his momentum to spin him into the wall.

GUNN
(continued)
You ain't going nowhere!

CRAZY GUY
Oh, we are.

CRAZY GUY grabs GUNN'S face. There's some kind of energy transfer. GUNN staggers backwards and falls to the ground in a heap.

CRAZY GUY looks down at GUNN. He turns and tries to get away but ANGEL is already in front of him.

ANGEL
Hi.

With a powerful right hook, ANGEL floors the CRAZY GUY.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Night
CORDELIA is on the phone to ANGEL. FRED is near her. CONNOR is pacing the lobby.

CORDELIA
"He was many"? Isn't that what you said
the guy in the hospital told you?

ANGEL
(voice-over)
Yeah. You have an idea?

CORDELIA
I think so. Are you on your way back?

ANGEL
(voice-over)
Uh-huh. Figure this out as soon as you can.
Gunn's in trouble.

CORDELIA
Gunn? Is it bad?

ANGEL
(voice-over)
I need you to work out what's wrong. Quickly.

ANGEL disconnects the phone on his end. CORDELIA puts the speaker down.

FRED
What is it? Is it Charles?

CORDELIA
Angel's taking care of him. He's on his way
now.

FRED
Oh, God. Charles...

CORDELIA puts her hand on FRED'S shoulder.

CORDELIA
Angel will make sure he's okay. Right now
I have an idea.

FRED
You do?

CORDELIA
Something Angel just said... The guy they've
got kept talking about "them".

FRED
Well, he is crazy. Kinda goes with the
territory.

CORDELIA
I know that but... after my vision... What
I felt...

CONNOR comes towards them after listening to their conversation.

CONNOR
You heard voices?

CORDELIA
Worse than that. It was like there were these
things in my head, trying to get control.

CONNOR
The killer is possessed by a demon?

CORDELIA
Demons. In the plural. It almost felt like he
got some kind of relief from unloading them
onto me. I could feel it. I wasn't sure what
it meant at the time but now...

CONNOR
I know about this. In the Quor-Toth there
were parasitic demons that would infect
the others... as more and more infected
a demon, the host would go mad.

FRED
But why would it transfer to Cordy?

CONNOR
I don't know.

The hotel door bursts open. ANGEL comes in with the CRAZY GUY in his arms. GUNN staggers in looking a little dazed. FRED runs to him.

FRED
Charles! What's wrong?

GUNN
Not too sure about that but... need to sit
down...

FRED helps him onto a seat. She looks up at ANGEL.

FRED
What happened?

ANGEL
Mr Armstrong here did something to him. He
touched him and there was some kind of...
energy transfer. Energy transfers are never
good... well, with the exception of Cordy's
vision but...

CORDELIA
Oh no.

ANGEL
Well, yeah... your visions did hurt for a few
years but...

CORDELIA
No. That was a "I think I know what happened"
oh no.

ANGEL
You do?

CORDELIA nods.

CORDELIA
Demonic possession... possibly hundreds of
them in his mind...

CONNOR
He gets control by transferring them onto
someone else.

FRED is holding GUNN. He is murmuring nonsense.

GUNN
It's not right. It's not the right body. But it's
stronger... younger... No. That's not the point.
It's wrong. It can't be.

FRED
Will he be okay? Yours didn't last did they?

CORDELIA
I don't think it was real with me. There was
no...

ANGEL
Physical contact! This thing needs physical
contact.

FRED
So what do we do?

CONNOR
We could kill the demons!

Everyone stares at CONNOR.

ANGEL
We exorcise them.


Scene: Int. Wolfram and Hart, Corridor, Night
With several folders tucked under his arm and a jacket on, WESLEY is leaving the building. There's a sense of urgency in his step. He looks back a few times.

He bumps into LILAH who is coming out of her office. The folders hit the floor.

LILAH
Working late again? Really, Wes, you're
more dedicated than we give you credit
for.

WESLEY gathers up the folders.

WESLEY
It's not for your benefit, believe me. I just
needed some resources I haven't got back
home to help with the translation.

LILAH
Like I said. Dedicated.

WESLEY
I thought you were out on the town with
our new client.

LILAH
And what made you think that exactly?

WESLEY
He needed a date for some dinner or other.
(dripping sarcasm)
I'm sure he would have asked me but I
dread to think what the tabloids would have
said in the morning.

LILAH
But Jason does like to surprise people.

WESLEY motions towards LILAH'S office.

WESLEY
I think we need to talk.

LILAH
I really don't have time for this, Wes. Places
to be you know.

WESLEY
Move.


Scene: Bar [Int.], Night
WESLEY walks along a street. Multicoloured lights are all around. People walk out of clubs and bars in a dizzy, exotic haze. Several cars shoot past, beeping their horns loudly.

He stops at the entrance to a bar and sighs. He walks in.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Angel's Office [Int.], Night
The CRAZY GUY sits tied to a seat. ANGEL walks around him. The CRAZY GUY starts to moan as he comes to.

ANGEL
You're with us, I see. Makes things a
little easier… on me.

The CRAZY GUY opens his eyes. He looks around. He's shocked and confused.

CRAZY GUY
Where am I? What's going on?

ANGEL
You're in my office.

CRAZY GUY
Who the hell are you?

ANGEL
Who the hell am I? I'm the guy who's trying
to work out why exactly you're killing people
and possessing my friends.

CRAZY GUY
No… not again.

ANGEL
(frowns)
Apparently yes, again.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Night
We can see ANGEL and the CRAZY GUY talking though the door into the office. FRED is tending to GUNN. GUNN is more than a little out of it.

FRED
Cordy's trying to work out what to do to
help you. It'll be okay.

GUNN
Sure...

FRED
Are you sure you're okay? You seem a
little...

GUNN
I'm fine. It's just the voices.

FRED
You have voices and you're trying to tell me
you're fine?

GUNN
It's all under control, baby. Nothing that
can't be... Will someone shut up this
damn racket!?! It hurts! No! I'm not doing
that! I'm not! I...

FRED
Charles!!!

GUNN jumps to his feet. He tries to get out. FRED runs to hold him back.

GUNN
Get your hands off me!!

He pushes FRED away. She falls onto the floor. GUNN reacts.

GUNN
(continued)
Oh God... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to...

GUNN holds his hand out for FRED to take. She doesn't. She gets to her feet.

FRED
I think you need to sit down.

GUNN
Yeah... Maybe I do... Sitting down isn't getting
us anywhere! I need to get out! Get it out!

GUNN tries to make a break for it again.

CONNOR comes running from the reception and jumps across the room. He pushes GUNN to the floor.

CONNOR
Maybe tying him up would be a good idea.

FRED nods nervously.

FRED
Uh-huh...

Scene: Seedy Bar [Int.], Night
WESLEY sits at the bar, sipping from a glass of whiskey. We PULL BACK to see that there are around twenty empty glasses in front of him. He takes his drink down in one gulp.

A wakes some money at the bar tender.

WESLEY
Another one! Make it a triple!

An ATTRACTIVE WOMAN sits down next to him. She smiles. He doesn't respond.

Another drink is put down in front of WESLEY.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
Bad day?

WESLEY
(grimaces)
Something like that.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
I saw from over there. You looked lonely.

WESLEY
(sarcastically)
Whatever made you think that.

The WOMAN seems to be hurt a little.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
Well, I'm sorry! If you want me to go I'll just...

She makes a move to go. WESLEY stops her.

WESLEY
No. No, I'm the one who should be sorry. And
yeah, I've had a bad day.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
Tell me about it. How about buying me a drink?

WESLEY
Or maybe we should just cut to the chase.

The WOMAN acts innocent, coy.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
Whatever do you mean?

WESLEY
You know exactly what I mean.

The WOMAN puts her hand on WESLEY'S.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
My name's Susan.

WESLEY
Wesley.

ATTRACTIVE WOMAN
Cute. So how about we get outta here? We'll talk
rates later.

WESLEY
Sounds almost like a plan.

WESLEY gets off his seat and walks, slightly unsteadily, out of the bar with the HOOKER.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Angel's Office [Int.], Night
The CRAZY GUY, now with some semblance of control, is talking to ANGEL.

ANGEL
Well, that's the thing. I don't know anything
about you. All we've got is your name and
that you've been locked up in Oakville until
the last two nights.

CRAZY GUY
I know... I remember escaping... then everything
else comes in flashes... They're in charge most
of the time.

ANGEL
Them?

CRAZY GUY
The demons.

ANGEL
So you're possessed?

CRAZY GUY
(shaking his head)
No. Not exactly. I'm not human anyway... I
come from a line of... I don't know what you'd
call it, spirit channelling demons.

ANGEL
The Pariquiy? I thought they were extinct.

The CRAZY GUY nods.

CRAZY GUY
They are... well, all of the purebloods died
out two centuries ago. I'm mostly human
but the powers from my father's side still
exist.

ANGEL
And let me guess? You can't control them.

CRAZY GUY
That just about sums it up. My grandfather...
he controlled any of the spirits that tried
to attach themselves to him... but my father...

ANGEL
He couldn't?

CRAZY GUY
He... he killed himself. A long time ago. It
got too much for him.

ANGEL
And now you're having the same problem?

CRAZY GUY
I'm like a magnet for demonic spirits. They
keep taking over... but they fight for control.
It never ends.

ANGEL
And the only relief you get is from passing
them off to other people?

CRAZY GUY looks at ANGEL with desperation in his eyes.

CRAZY GUY
It's the only way... I stop their suffering before
it even starts... I do that for them...

ANGEL
By killing them.

CRAZY GUY
But I need to get the voices out. It never lasts
but I need the clarity. They never suffer what I
do...

ANGEL
And you don't think they suffer? You've murdered
one woman in the last two days... and God knows
how many before you were locked up!

CRAZY GUY
You don't understand...

ANGEL
I understand perfectly well! You're selfish!

CRAZY GUY
I'm not! I... No! This isn't right! They want to get
out! They're trying to escape! I can't... I can't...

ANGEL'S voice gets louder and angrier.

ANGEL
You know, sometimes you have to suffer... Yeah,
you got a bad deal but that's not the fault of
the people you kill!

CRAZY GUY
They want to be free... I can't fight the anymore!

ANGEL
Sometimes you have to accept your fate!

With a sudden burst of strength, the CRAZY GUY breaks free of the ropes that hold him.

ANGEL rushes to stop him. He is thrown into the wall.

CRAZY GUY
You don't get it! You never will!

ANGEL
I know a thing or two about having a demon
inside me...

CRAZY GUY
But not thousands! All scratching at my skull...
All struggling to break free... to get control!

He lifts the table and throws it at ANGEL, pinning him for a few seconds. CRAZY GUY takes this as a chance to get away.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Night
The CRAZY GUY runs out into the lobby. CONNOR notices and jumps into action. He punches the CRAZY GUY who staggers back. CONNOR punches again. CRAZY GUY grabs his fist and throws him away with ease. CONNOR hits the wall.

ANGEL comes running out of his office. He jumps onto CRAZY GUY'S back, knocking him to the floor. CRAZY GUY thrusts his elbow into ANGEL'S face.

CRAZY GUY turns to look at GUNN and FRED. He looks at FRED.

CRAZY GUY
Relief...

CRAZY GUY jumps at FRED, touching her face.

CONNOR
(off-screen)
No!

CONNOR runs forward, pulling a small knife out of his boot. He rams it into the CRAZY GUY'S back.

The CRAZY GUY slumps to the ground. There is a sudden burst of energy and CONNOR is thrown back. Hundreds of blue, yellow and purple energy bolts emanate from the CRAZY GUY's mouth and start flying around the lobby.

ANGEL runs to CONNOR.

CORDELIA comes from the reception.

CORDELIA
Oh God...

She looks up at the demon spirits, swirling around the ceiling.

ANGEL and CONNOR slowly look up.

ANGEL
This is bad, right?

CORDELIA
We needed to bind the spirits... You just
freed them...

CONNOR ducks one of the energy bolts and slides across the floor to CORDELIA.

CONNOR
Sorry....

The spirits swirl around.


ACT IV

Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Night
FRED dives for cover as several non-corporal demons nose-dive toward her. She is grabbed and pulled up through the air.

FRED
Help!

GUNN pulls himself up.

GUNN
Fred!

FRED is pulled even higher. She struggles against her captors. They release her. She falls. Falls. Falls... and lands in GUNN's arms.

FRED
Thank you! Thank you!

GUNN
I'm here for you, baby.

GUNN suddenly falls to the ground. Spirits wrap around his legs and drag him across the floor.

GUNN
Aaaghhh!

GUNN is pulled through a door. It closes behind him.

CORDELIA lifts above the ground and starts spinning around.

CORDELIA
Okay! This is a lot more fun when I'm doing
it myself...

ANGEL
Cordy!

ANGEL runs to CORDELIA. He is thrown straight up and hits the high ceiling before coming crashing down onto the hard tiled floor with a crunch.

CONNOR looks around desperately. Spirits come down to him. He swipes his knife at them. They move out of his way, not because it can hurt them but because they're playing with him. He gets more and more frustrated.

CONNOR
Gah!

CONNOR runs forward, hacking and slashing at nothing.

His eyes open wide. He is hurled across the room into a wall. He manages to stay on his feet. He is thrown again into the opposite wall. He is thrown a third time. He collides with ANGEL. They both hit the floor.

ANGEL
Connor! Are you...

CONNOR
I'm fine. We just need to... agh!

CONNOR is lifted up. He skids across the ground and is knocked out when his head hits the wall.

ANGEL
Connor!!!!

FRED
We have to do something.

CORDELIA is dropped onto the floor. She looks up.

CORDELIA
We have to contain them in a body! We
can't bind them when they're free!

ANGEL
Any idea of how we're going to do that?

CORDELIA
I think I can direct them into someone. I'm
not sure but I learnt a lot when I was with...

CORDELIA is lifted up and tossed across the room by two different groups of spirits in a weird game of catch!

The reception door is kicked open. GUNN comes running into the lobby.

ANGEL looks desperately up at CORDELIA.

ANGEL
We need to do this now! Put them in me!

CORDELIA is dropped. GUNN runs in to catch her.

GUNN
Me. Do it to me.

ANGEL
What?!?

GUNN
I've got one of these things in me already!
I may as well give it some company. Put
them in me!

ANGEL
No!

ANGEL is hurled into the wall.

GUNN settles CORDELIA down.

GUNN
Put them in me!!!

CORDELIA looks at him.

CORDELIA
You're sure?

GUNN
Do it!


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Lobby [Int.], Night
The spirits are causing complete chaos. Furniture is being hurled in all directions. FRED tries to hold onto the desk to keep standing. CONNOR is still unconscious on the floor.

CORDELIA looks up at the spirits. Her eyes begin to glow. She lifts off the ground.

ANGEL watches nervously. He holds GUNN down.

The spirits are drawn towards CORDELIA. They spin around her. She looks down at GUNN. The spirits fly towards him.

GUNN is knocked back as the spirits enter his body through his skin. He glows momentarily then collapses.

CORDELIA comes back down.

ANGEL
Now what?

CORDELIA
This is the part I can't do.

She takes her necklace off from around her neck. She throws it to ANGEL.

ANGEL catches it.

ANGEL
What's this?

CORDELIA
An ordinary run of the mill crystal. The book
you got me reading said we need it to bind
the demon.

ANGEL
You read that?

CORDELIA
Shut up and get it done before I demand
another pay rise.

ANGEL
Do what?

CORDELIA
Oh. Yeah.

She pulls out a sheet from a book out her back pocket. She hands it to ANGEL.

CORDELIA
(continued)
Read this. I can't say a word of it.

ANGEL
And how old was the book you ripped this
out of?

CORDELIA
Only fifty years. Who'd have thought you'd
own something printed in the last two centuries.

ANGEL
(sarcastic)
Thanks...

ANGEL folds out the piece of paper.

GUNN suddenly gets up looking manic.

GUNN
No! You can't do this! They need a body!

GUNN jumps to his feet. He runs at ANGEL, knocking him down.

GUNN
(continued)
They need a body!!!

GUNN begins to punch ANGEL. Over and over and over.

ANGEL grabs GUNN'S fist.

ANGEL
Stop! Gunn would want this to stop! Get
out of him!

ANGEL kicks GUNN from on top of him. He reaches for the pad, looking at the words.

ANGEL
(continued)
K'uartos Izanbe jorolae. Juanis qua'polis
trynalis.

GUNN jumps at ANGEL again, with the intent of killing him.

GUNN
Stop! They need a body!!!! They tell me that
they...

CORDELIA pulls GUNN away from ANGEL.

CORDELIA
Finish it!!

ANGEL
Uh... hailest. Qainl'as voz. Philisio.

He holds the crystal up. It begins to glow.

ANGEL
(continued)
K'uartos Izanbe jorolae. Qainl'as voz. Philisio.

GUNN falls back. The spirits float out of his body. They hover above him for a moment then fly into the crystal. ANGEL is knocked back.

The crystal necklace flies across the ground and comes to a stop at the bottom of the stairs.

ANGEL looks towards it. CORDELIA does the same.

FRED runs to GUNN. He starts coming to his senses.

GUNN
Is it over?


Scene: Street [Ext.], Night
WESLEY slowly walks down a street. He is a complete mess, his top shirt button undone, his jacket on lopsided. We see him pull up a bottle in a brown paper bag. He takes a large gulp.

He looks up. We PULL OUT and see for the first time that he is standing outside the Hyperion Hotel. He stares at the building sadly.

He staggers along the car park and up the steps towards the entrance. He leans forward to look inside.

WESLEY'S POV. We PAN ACROSS and see that the lobby is a mess. Eventually we see the group are hugging.

WESLEY stands watching this for a while then stagger down the steps. He stumbles. He only just manages to keep his balance and stay standing. But all his strength fades away.

He slumps to the ground and starts sobbing.


Scene: Hyperion Hotel, Angel's Office [Int.], Night
ANGEL hangs the crystal necklace around a small statuette of a demon. He looks at it.

GUNN
(off-screen)
I don't think it suits it.

ANGEL turns around. GUNN is standing by the door.

ANGEL
I told you to go home and get some rest.

GUNN
That's the funny thing about me. I don't like
resting until I know everything's settled.

ANGEL
Everything is settled. You're un-possessed,
the demons are trapped in this crystal and
as long as no one breaks it they won't get
free again...

GUNN
Yeah. But something doesn't feel finished.

ANGEL
I'm really grateful for what you did back there.
I would have done it... I didn't want any of you
to put yourself through it... having one demon
inside you... trying to take control... That's
something I've lived with for two centuries and
it never gets easier. But you let hundreds of
them inside you...

GUNN
Ah, it was nothing.

ANGEL looks pointedly at GUNN.

GUNN
(continued)
Okay, actually it was pretty damn awful but
you know me. Gotta make it look like it didn't
do anything... But for a while there I knew
what madness was...
(smiles)
...and after everything I thought about you,
I'm really surprised you're so... sane.

ANGEL
Gee. Thanks.

GUNN
It's scary but kinda comforting at the same
time.

ANGEL smiles.
