Home of the Underdogs Review

Back to Site List | Site Review | Apps List | Game List | Manuals List | THE SITE!!!

Well, the only negative thing about this site is its color scheme, but that's just my opinion. Pale yellow just isn't my color. The layout is amazing and so is the ease of navigation. On the front page alone you get picture links to 4 of the (most downloaded?) games, news, the newest inductee to the belated hall of fame, tip of the day, a quiz, most wanted, the spotlight, and all the navigational stuff. At the top is a great image map. First you can navigate through the information on the site - About, FAQ, News, Contact information. Then you can navigate the games by genre and choose to go to the manuals or maps page. That's the end of the image map. The navigation continues on the left column of the page where you can browse through the games by theme or year in dropdown boxes or by alphabet or even search. Below this you can navigate through the community sections and then the various resource sections. All of this is nicely laid out and manages to make a huge amount of information easy to navigate through.

There are over 1450 PC games on the Home of the Underdogs. This count far surpasses any other abandonware site. "What about quality?" you may ask. Well, the amazing thing is that each game has a quality review ranging from a paragraph to over a page long. Also, there are user ratings, a fact sheet, docs and extras, and more stuff like other similar games on the site. Each game then has a link to search for it on Mobygames and through the web. There are also apps, which are given the same treatment as games, long reviews and all. Manuals number nearly 700 and range in quality from .txt format to the high quality .pdf format.

The extras on HOTU are innumorous. First, there is the about page which tells about the various features of the page, it's purpose, and why it supports the abandonware ideals. Then there is the FAQ, which goes more in depth about the site and answers technical questions, defines terms, gives a brief history and more. The news page lists the latest updates back to a little over half a month along with the games that have been added. The contact page is a little humorous in my opinion. It lists reasons you should not contact him for about a page and a half and then gives you two e-mail addresses. Then ther is the Maps section which is quite self-explanatory although for some reason it is hosted on Xoom. I guess this is because it's more of an affiliate than a section of the site. Next there are the community sections. The forum is used mostly for technical help and sometimes requests. There are polls and quizzes, the first of which has questions like: "All of the following pairs of games are based on the same engine or made by the same designers EXCEPT:" The chatroom is powered by jIRC and is #underdogs on EFNET. The rules are listed on the site along with a general introduction to chatting on IRC. The guestbook may very well be the largest in the abandonware scene with 250 entries (probably the maximum that guestbook can handle.) There is a contribution page where you can look through the wantlist or see what other stuff you can contribute (reviews, documents, company info, more...) Finally you find the resource sections including affiliates, in which there is a link to the only affiliate of HOTU - CW#3. Then there is a links section with links to game venders / online stores, other abandonware sites, game help/info sites, game review sites, and even non-PC gaming sites. There is also a resources section for fellow webmasters where you can find banners to link back to HOTU and more information about putting up gamelists and such. The credits page (improperly placed under resources IMO) gives a whole load of credit to various people and sites. Then there is a link to HOTU's advertising information page on flycast. There is also the hall of belated fame I previously mentioned where the best of the underdogs are inducted and honored as they normally would not be. These are the top of the top dogs ;) There is also a small section with notes on the new design and a spotlight on the best of the newer underdogs and where you can buy them.

The only person who might claim there is a better abandonware site than HOTU is the overly humble Underdogs himself. The fact is there is no site that better combines quantity with quality. This site has been around since I "discovered" abandonware and will always be here since his "To Do list is always 300+ games long, for some reason." HOTU will always keep you interested and is worth the daily visit. Updates are often and there are so many extras to the site that many people may have stopped reading this review midway through. If you want to see what people mean by a "quality abandonware site," click on the link at the top of this page. You won't be disappointed.
