The Golden Site has a completely new layout! It's a lot nicer than the previous, although the yellow color sceme is not my favorite. The site has several sections of the main page and is easily navigable through the bar on the left, although it no longer uses frames. In the middle you find the news and on the right is the essay/introduction on abandonware and the site that used to take the form of an entrance page. Below the news is a box showing what the newest games added are and then showing an image of the golden knight. Below that is even more stuff like a listing of the most popular games on the site, general abandonware news and at the bottom - banners. All in all the layout is terrific, if a little bit random. Navigation through the games is done by drop down menus, but the rest is done through navigation boxes similar to the one on the top left of the main page. The graphics are nice so despite the yellow color scheme this is a really cool looking site.
The actual content makes it an excellent site. While there are not a large amount of games, they are all carefully reviewed. Each one has several screenshots and describes each aspect of the game, from graphics and sound to gameplay. There is also a cool rating system which rates the game by graphics, sound, fun, originality and overall. A lot of effort is put into reviewing each game and taking screenshots, etc. The result is great and proves that sometimes it's better to look through several smaller sites than through one large site. The only applications are for compression.
This site now has plenty of extras. While there is no longer an entrance page, the content is on the main page and so are a lot of the extras as I previously described. Now there are manuals throughout the games pages and in the vault. Speaking of, the vault is jam-packed with the extras on the site including, not just the manuals but an FAQ, guestbook, and soon to come: articles, a forum, walkthroughs, and abandonware community news. There is a nice link section with small descriptions of the sites it links to and a cool crew page. Also there will soon be a members page.
I personally love this site simply because it is one of those small ones that get overlooked by most people. Like a precious stone beside large boulders, this site is a rare gem in and of itself. Now with extras and a steadily growing inventory of games, this site has gone from excellent to far out so go for a little browse ;) | | | |
