- Summary on back cover -
A vampire in the Italian age of gold...
Sixteen years old, Vittorio is the sole survivor of a bizzare and violent massacre at his father's Tuscan palazzo.  Escaping to the Florence of Cosimo de Medici, he seeks vengeance and retribution.  But though he has been saved from death by a mysterious woman, he finds himself at the mercy of demonic, bloody nightmares, war and political intrigue.  And beyond even these perils, Vittorio faces being torn apart by a dangerous love.
Against a backdrop of the wonders - both sacred and profane - of Renaissance Italy, with its art and ferocity, angels and demons, Anne Rice introduces a seductive new character and creates a passionate, tragic legend of doomed young love and lost innocence.

- My opinion -
Although I enjoyed the book I felt it was not as good as the previous Vampire Chronicles.  Perhaps the character of Vittorio reminded me of Armand a little too        much.  They were both created at around the same time, in the same        country and were around the same mortal age when they became immortal.  Still Vittorio was not as interesting and complicated as Armand.  It also seems unlikely to me that Vittorio and Ursula could have remained so isolated from the entire vampire world for so long.   It would be very interesting if Anne could write a novel where they meet our more familiar immortals but I do not think she will do this.

If Vittorio the Vampire is your favourite novel vote for it.

Amber Lamain's site is highly recommended.  It has sections on Florence and is beautifully designed.
