Character description
'He was a vision now.  Dressed in a splendid brocade coat of rose and gold, he wore slippers with gold heels, and layers of Italian lace at his collar.  Only his hair was what it used to be, dark and very curly and boyish looking for some reason though it was tied back with a fine bit of silk ribbon.'

I found an interesting web site which explains the meaning behind names.  I was shocked to discover they have most of the vampire's names there!  It may not be an accurate meaning but why not look anyway, if only for fun.
Click here for the meaning of the name
Nicolas
and the short form of his name
Nicki.

Here is the meaning from the Virgin book of baby names by Emily Wood.  This is likely to be accurate and more relevant.
~ Nicolas ~
From the Greek words meaning 'victory' and 'people' so probably 'conquerer'.  It was the name borne by the fifth century saint, otherwise known as Santa Claus, and the Bishop of Myra who is also patron saint of Greece and Russia as well as of sailors and children.
- My opinion of Nicki -
There's something very attractive about him, I can't quite explain it.  Despite the fact that he only appears in one book, he is a memorable character.  The violin is such a haunting and amazing instrument isn't it?  I've always thought so.  Listen to Paganini's caprice 24 for proof, as if you need any.
