I found an interesting web site which explains the meaning behind names. I was shocked to discover they have most of the vampire's names there! It may not be an accurate meaning but why not look anyway, if only for fun.

~ Madeleine ~
The French form of the second word of the name Mary Magdalene. This was based on the place Magdala, a biblical town in the modern Israel. In a very different vein, Madeline is the name of the little schoolgirl, heroine of the book by Ludwig Bemelmans published in 1952. The story is currently having a second lease of life, having been serialised on television and made into a film, so the name may become more popular.

A useless piece of information - there is an area of Paris called La Madeleine, close to (or in I can't remember) the Rue Royale! (:

Violet eyes? Just like Daniel. Very strange! Anyhow Madeleine is a kind enough character for the brief amount of time she appears. We know very little about her so I don't feel very strongly about her one way or another. Still she certainly didn't deserve to die in such an awful way.

- Status in the film Interview with the Vampire -
Madeleine was played by an Italian actress called Domiziana Giordano. For the brief time she appeared she did a credible job in my opinion.
