I found an interesting web site which explains the meaning behind names.  I was shocked to discover they have most of the vampire's names there!  It may not be an accurate meaning but why not look anyway, if only for fun.

Louis.

Here is the meaning from the Virgin book of baby names by Emily Wood.  This is likely to be accurate and more relevant.
~ Louis ~
One of the most common French names, based on the old German words meaning 'famous warrior'.  It was borne by eighteen French kings including Louis XIV, the 'Sun King', and the unfortunate Louis XVI, husband of Marie Antoinette, who with his wife, went to the guillotine during the French Revolution.  The name was brought to England after the Norman conquest and its spelling was usually anglicised to Lewis.
This is an excellent picture of Louis by Pris.   Look at his eyes and the expression.  That is the Louis I have in mind.  Wonderful work Pris, I do hope you keep up your drawing.  Thank you for allowing me to display the picture here.
- My opinion of Louis -
Ah sweet Louis!  I've always liked him.  I find him very appealing even if he is rather depressed a lot.  I have to say, Louisians are the among the most devoted group of Riceans I have ever encountered.  I can certainly understand why, Louis is so modest he needs others to praise him!  I've always thought that Lestat should appreciate him more.  His devotion to Lestat is so touching to me particularly the scene in Merrick where he reads to the comatose Lestat.  When I read Merrick, I was very interested in what happened to Louis, it appears he may be much altered in the next novel.  Whether this is a good thing or not, we will have to wait and see.  Don't know what I'm talking about?  Read
Merrick.

- Status of Louis in the films Interview with the Vampire and The Queen of the Damned -
As everyone knows Louis was played by Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire.  In fact I should be very grateful - because of this fact I first read an Anne Rice book.  Yes I used to be huge Brad fan so it is hard for me to be objective when describing his performance.  Personally I think the scene when he discovers Claudia in ashes is very moving.
As for the Queen of the Damned - he will
not appear.  Some Louis fans may feel this is a good thing.
