I found an interesting web site which explains the meaning behind names.  I was shocked to discover they have most of the vampire's names there!  It may not be an accurate meaning but why not look anyway, if only for fun.
Click here for the meaning of the name
Florian.

Here is the meaning from the Penguin dictionary of first names by David Pickering.  This is likely to be more accurate and relevant.
~ Florian ~
English and German first name derived from the Roman Florianus itself from flos('flower').  Borne by a 3rd century Roman saint, it has made irregular appearances among English speakers since medieval times but has become increasingly rare since the end of the 19th century.
- My opinion of Florian -
He's not very likeable of course and his villainous ways remind me of Santiago.  I'm not sure if he was Italian but I assumed that he was.  He got what he deserved.  Still it is frustrating that we know little of his mortal life and his background.  Creating a more complicated character in him might have made the book less predictable.
